PROGRAM: "LEARN TO WORK WITH STONE"
Amongst its manyundertakingsfor sustainable development and the rediscovery of useful traditionaloccupations, the Sporades Center, also offers the program "Learn to work with stone". In this comprehensiveprogram,renowned island craftsmen, from the old stone masons, will convey how to work with stone and enthusiastically express thecenturies old knowledge received from their fathers.The Sporades Center gives you the opportunity to train as a master stone mason or to learn to work with stone for your pleasure.
The program’s objective, in addition to the dissemination of traditional knowledge to locals and visitors, is the repair and restoration of as many as possible island stone structures.Our bridges, fountains and xerolithies (dry-stone structures), which now lie in ruins, give beauty to our landscape, reminiscent of our civilization and are worth restoring to their original beauty.
Who can participate:
- those who wish to combine their holidays with learning
- those who wish to acquire general knowledge for stone and learn to work with it for their personal use.
- those who wish to train, become certifiedstone masons, and pursue this skill as a career.
- volunteerswishing to work in the maintenanceand restoration of our Island΄s stone structures.
Program dates and cost:
27 Apr-8 May 2013 (in conjunction with Easter holidays) -400 € each (Groupbunk beds) or 525 € eachsharing double room.
19-26 May 2013-250 € each (Group bunk beds) or $350 each sharing double room.
22-30 June 2013–275 € each(Group bunk beds) or 375 € per eachsharing double room.
Those who wish not toshare a room will encore an additional charge.
Participants provide gloves and protection glasses.
Sporades Center members get 10% discount.
Extension is possible upon request.
This program is offered free of charge to Skopelosisland students.
Precondition:minimum 6 paid participants for the class to make.
Ferry timetables and pricesfrom mainland Greece to Skopelos and back will be provided for participants.
The cost includes:
Hotel, breakfast, two lunches, two dinners, hotel transfer to and from the Harbor of Glossa, Skopelos, all instruction, transportationto worksite and back, tour of the island, certificates award and recognition of voluntary work ceremony for participation in the seminar, but Does not include transportation from and to mainland Greece.
1stDay–TraveltoSkopelos -Arrival at the port of Loutraki-Glossa, transfer to hotel, welcome refreshments to be followed with a leisure orientationwalk with the place and its inhabitants. Welcome dinner with other members of the Group and return to the hotel.
2ndDay – ClassroomInstruction– breakfast, transfer to Sporades Center, introductory theoretical lesson in stone includes: properties, selection, classification, applications and design of stone construction. Lunch, possible visit to quarry and stone structures (old stone houses, roofs, fountains, bridges, and other), return to your hotel, the rest of the day free.
3rdDay –Alldayfamiliarizationwithuseoftools, stoneandproject- breakfast, transfer to worksite, use of tools and materials, preparation of construction materials and space, lunch on location, continue construction preparation until 3: 30 pm, transfer to hotel, rest of the day free.
4thDay–Alldayworkingwithstone–breakfast, transfer to the worksite, learn to shape and lay stone, lunch on location, continue working with stone till 3:30 pm, transfer to hotel, the rest of the day free.
5thDay -Alldayworkingwithstone– breakfast, transfer to the worksite, learn to shape and lay stone, lunch on location, continue working with stone till 3:30 pm, transfer to hotel, the rest of the day free.
6thDay–TouroftheIsland-breakfast, tour of traditional arts workshops, apiary, women’s cooperative, etc., a fun evening withcertificate awards, recognition of voluntary work ceremony for participation in the seminar, horsedouvres, music and dancing.
7thDay– Free–breakfast, relaxation, shopping, swimming, or whatever else you wish doing, farewell dinner.
8thDay- Travel– breakfast, transfer to the port of Loutraki, departure to your destination.
